Online Tusla Briefing 1st March: Child Safeguarding Statements & Child Protection Policies & Procedures

March 1, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm GMT

DESCRIPTION

Following last year’s voluntary audit, NYCI’s Child Protection Programme is partnering with Tusla again to share the information and learning from the audit that will support the youth work sector to review and update your Child Safeguarding Statements and Risk Assessments, and your Child Protection Policies in line with the Children First Act 2015.

Following this briefing, we invite all youth work organisations to participate in an audit of their Child Safeguarding Statements and Risk Assessments. This is a valuable opportunity for youth work organisations to gain expert advice and feedback from Tusla on these important safeguarding documents and we hope you will attend and participate!

This is also a valuable opportunity for the youth work sector as a whole as NYCI’s Child Protection Programme will receive a report from Tusla outlining areas of non-compliance across the sector (with no identifying information) so we can develop the necessary supports to address these and support the sector with compliance to Children First, 2015.

We are inviting you to attend an online briefing from the Child Safeguarding Statement Compliance Unit (CSSCU) and the Children First Information & Advice Service (CFIAS) on Wednesday 1st of March 2023 @ 11am – 12.30pm. The briefing will look at:

  • The requirement for providers of relevant services (under the Children First Act 2015) to have Child Safeguarding Statements (CSS) in place.
  • Child Safeguarding Statement content, compliance criteria, issues for consideration, the definition of a provider of a relevant service, and will have a particular focus on safeguarding risk assessments.
  • Outline of child safeguarding policy and procedures which can contribute to creating a safer environment for children and young people with a particular focus on the responsibilities of mandated persons and DLPs, specified procedures from the child safeguarding statement and ensuring all language, definitions and reporting forms align with the Children First Act, 2015.
  • Provision of resources and tools for reviewing the Child Safeguarding Statement & the Child Protection Policy.

**Important Information**

  • All documentation will be submitted to Siobhán Laffey, NYCI’s National Child Protection Manager who will forward the relevant documents to each Tusla team.
  • All feedback from the CSSCU will be sent directly to organisations.
  • Documents must be submitted by 14th April 2023.
  • At the briefing both the CSSCU and the CFIAO will provide services with tools/checklists to support them with reviewing and updating their documentation.
  • Please note, if during the course of your participation in this voluntary process the CSSCU are concerned about a potential risk to children, they will formally request your Child Safeguarding Statement and commence a formal process of review.
