NYCI’s Youth Arts Programme invites participants to this training to get a taste of how to bring a fun, meaningful and inclusive facilitated process of spoken word poetry to your youth work practice.

This training will explore the power of words for youth empowerment. We will explore the meaning of spoken word, and establish steps  taken to develop a spoken work piece – i.e., character development, emotion and connection, and spoken word performance.

Delivered by

Kelvin Akpaloo is a youth worker, creative practitioner, spoken word artist and is passionate  about bringing local-global connections into young people’s everyday experiences. He co-facilitates the Young People’s Committee for Youth 2030.

Working at both national and international levels, he uses the creative arts, especially spoken word poetry, and dance as methods to empower young people and youth workers in tackling inequality both locally and globally. The facilitation of a space for young people to have their voices heard is an important part of this process.

Kelvin is a strong advocate for minorities and believes in the voices and the power of youth to create positive change in the world. This training aims to equip participants with knowledge and skills to use Spoken Word methodologies as a tool for youth voice and empowerment.
