Developing Digital Media Literacy from CyberSafeKids! 2 week FREE course!

February 20 @ 11:00 am - February 29 @ 8:30 pm GMT

For the third year running NYCI’s Child Protection Programme is delighted to partner with CyberSafeKids and offer their Developing Digital Media Literacy course to the youth work sector! The course has been updated and is now delivered over two sessions of 90 minutes each and provides participants with an opportunity to develop the increasingly vital skills of digital media literacy in your work. This course is FREE for youth workers and those working or volunteering  directly with young people in youth work settings.

The course is an online commitment of 90 minutes per week, for two weeks. No prior expertise in digital media literacy or online safety is required- just basic digital skills. In 2022 there were lots of requests from volunteers to attend the course, so this year we are offering two opportunities to avail of it; one during the day and one in the evening.

The aim of this course is to support youth workers and volunteers to enhance your awareness and skills development in digital media literacy so that you can apply and share this learning in your work and explore strategies for empowering the young people you work with to use technology in a stronger, smarter, and safer way.

The course will cover the following:

Daytime

  • Workshop One: Tuesday 20th February 11am – 12.30pm
    Critical Thinking & Digital Health
  • Workshop Two: Tuesday 27th February 11am – 12.30pm

About CyberSafeKids

Established in 2015, CyberSafeKids is an Irish registered charity which works to empower children, parents and teachers to navigate the online world in a safe and responsible manner. Our founders and staff have backgrounds in cybercrime investigation, law enforcement, forensic psychology, education, online child protection, academia and the not-for-profit sector. We can see on a daily basis how technology plays an increasingly important and integral part of both their present, and future lives. It is being used more and more widely in schools. Whilst we view this as a positive, empowering development, even a standard smartphone can potentially allow a child to take risks which were unthinkable 20 years ago.

To date, the charity has spoken directly to almost 40,000 children and to 9,000 parents. Based in robust global research, our educational sessions provide practical advice on how to embrace the opportunities for learning and enjoyment that technology can deliver, whilst equipping them with the tools to avoid harm. We want children to be able to embrace the opportunities for learning and enjoyment that technology can deliver, but we recognise that as parents and educators we have a responsibility to equip them with the tools to stay safe and avoid harm.
