Responding to Disclosures & Informing Parents/Guardians

April 16 @ 9:30 am - 5:00 pm IST

NYCI’s National Child Protection Programme is partnering with ASSC following 2022’s successful pilot providing training workshops on Responding to Disclosures. This year we will offer an additional workshop on Informing Parents/Guardians when a report has to be made to the statutory authorities (Tusla/An Garda Síochána). These workshops will take place in person, at the The Croke Park Hotel, Jones’ Road, Drumcondra, Dublin 3, D03 E5Y8 on Tuesday 16th April 2024 and places are available for free! We are inviting youth workers, safeguarding officers, DLPs, deputy DLPS, managers, and anyone else with safeguarding responsibilities in your youth work organisations to attend. We have 20 places available and you must attend for the full day. Tea, coffee and lunch will be provided on the day. More information on the workshops is available below.

Workshop 1: Responding to a Disclosure

Disclosure is a process where children/young people start to share their experiences of abuse or harm, and it can take place over a period of time. It takes a lot of courage, and they need to have someone they can trust who will believe them and get them help once they share this information. As a youth worker, a child/young person may come to view you as a trusted adult in their life, and they may decide to disclose to you that they are experiencing harm or abuse. There are many ways in which a child/young person may disclose that they are experiencing harm. They disclose directly or indirectly through other indicators, so it’s important that we are able to recognise when we might be receiving a disclosure that something is wrong. This workshop is being run with a small number of participants so we can examine and role-play in small groups how you might recognise and respond to a disclosure from a child or young person.

Workshop 2: Informing Parents:

Best practice advice from Tusla advises that we should inform parents/guardians about a concern that we have to report to the statutory bodies (Tusla or An Garda Síochána). This can be an anxiety-inducing process for staff as they want to maintain their relationship with the family of the child/young person involved. It is important to support parents/guardians through this process and to be clear about your obligations when it comes to safeguarding and protection of children/young people. This workshop is being run with a small number of participants so we can examine, and role play in small groups what we need to do in advance of informing parents, informing parents, and then the aftermath of informing parents of a concern that has to be reported to the statutory bodies (Tusla or An Garda Síochána).
