Free support for organisations working in STEAM-related public engagement
People’s experiences with STEAM* – the way we engage with it, use it and learn it – can vary because of socio-economic, gender-based, racial and other inequalities. Young people from certain groups and backgrounds may be less likely to enter and progress in STEAM-related careers and even to take part in enjoyable STEAM events, festivals and exhibitions. Youth work can act as an effective mechanism in addressing barriers to participation.
NYCI is seeking to pilot a collaborative project with six organisations based in Ireland that want to enhance equity and inclusion within their STEAM-related public engagement programmes by working with youth work organisations. The work will be showcased in late 2022.
NYCI will support participating organisations to:
- develop an understanding of how collaborations with youth work organisations can improve access to meaningful STEAM experiences for young people from groups or backgrounds that are under-represented in STEAM.
- explore a social justice framework and how it can be applied in a STEAM engagement context.
- identify, and develop collaborative projects with, local youth work organisations.
The offer:
- Up to three representatives from participating organisations will take part in our workshop series, `Working with youth work organisations for equity and inclusion in STEAM’. Three or four half-day workshops will take place between October 2021 and May 2022 (we will confirm the dates and whether some of the workshops will take place in-person in due course).
- Bespoke consultancy support based on an organisation’s particular support needs (e.g. support in identifying local youth work organisations with interests in STEAM).
- Opportunity to showcase collaborative work with a youth work organisation through NYCI.
