This e-learning has been developed to strengthen your capacity in supporting young people to recognise, track and develop their life skills and your capacity to capture the impact of non-formal education and youth work.

Skills Summary is an easy to use online tool that captures the skills young people gain by participating in youth work and volunteering opportunities, building their confidence, so that they can better communicate the value of these essential skills to future employers.

This training is for all who work with young people, regardless of your level of knowledge of the Skills Summary tool – you can start from the very beginning and get to know the concept or you can just refresh your knowledge in some areas if you have already done our training or have used Skills Summary.

Objectives

The objectives of this e-learning are to:

• Develop an understanding of Skills Summary, its benefits and its positive potential
• Enhance awareness of the importance and value of life skills young people develop through youth work and out of school activities
• Explore the features of the tool and learn how to use it
• Support learners to make a plan for implementing Skills Summary into their own work

• Youth workers, youth leaders and all who work with young people
• This e-learning is not for young people, parents and families. This is a dedicated e-learning to support those working in the youth sector in Ireland.

With the rapidly changing landscape of employment opportunities, it’s necessary to recognise how important are transferrable life skills in the digital economy and future workforce. Participating in non-formal learning settings helps young people develop those essential life skills. The positive impact of youth work and non-formal education must be valued and acknowledged. 

By the end of this e-learning you will:

• Understand the scope of Skills Summary.
• Have become familiar with the background of Skills Summary and its potential and the benefits to young people and those who work with them.
• Have recognised the relevance of Skills Summary to your own work context.
• Be able to identify the 12 core skills across 4 skill areas and recognise the relevance of those skills to young people’s development.
• Recognise how Skills Summary can also be valuable to employers.
• Be able to confidently navigate and use the online Skills Summary tool.
• Have resources to support you to help young people recognise and capture the skills they’re gaining through your projects and programmes.
• Have resources to support you to make a plan for how to implement Skills Summary into your own work.

What does it involve?

This e-learning consists of 6 modules that you can complete in the suggested order or you can click into modules at the order you prefer (for example, if you are already familiar with the concept of Skills Summary, but would like to remind yourself of the features of the website and how to navigate it, you can simply skip the first two modules and click into Module 3: Tour of the Tool). You can pause and take a break at any point you want/need and get back to it at a later stage.

There are also useful accompanying materials that you can access and download at each module.

The course takes approximately 30 minutes to complete overall.
